Briton Appeals Jail Sentence
A former army officer is appealing against his bribery conviction in Afghanistan. Bill Shaw, manager of security firm G4S who provide protection to foreign workers in Afghanistan, was convicted in March along with an Afghan colleague.
In court, he admitted to paying police officials for the release of two impounded vehicles. However, he was under the impression that he was paying a legitimate fine for the release and the officials concerned have now disappeared.
A Downing Street petition and a Facebook campaign have been launched by his family members to pressure the British government to secure his release.
Mr Shaw, who received an MBE for his army service, has been left shaken, physically weak and lacking confidence during his spell in Kabul’s notorious Pul-e-Charkhi prison. He is housed next to inmates who are members of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.
After being convicted on the bribery charges, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of £16, 185 ($23,468).
The British Foreign Office has said that it was providing Shaw with consular assistance and following the case closely.
