‘Dr Death’ Jailed In Australia

An Australian court has convicted a US surgeon after he botched a series of operations. Dr Jayant Patel was sentenced to seven years incarceration.

Patel, an Indian-born US citizen dubbed “Dr Death” by the Australian media, worked at an Australian hospital for a period of two years between 2003 and 2005.

The Brisbane Supreme Court found him guilty at a hearing earlier thisof the manslaughter of three patients.

Patel was also convicted on a separate charge of causing grievous bodily harm to another patient.

Patel had entered not guilty please to the manslaughter of Gerry Kemps, James Phillips and Mervyn Morris, and causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Vowles.

However, prosecutors contested that Patel’s operations fell well below the standard of a competent surgeon.

The court was told of botched operations, misdiagnosed patients, the removal of healthy organs and the use of sloppy surgical techniques during his time at Bundaberg Base Hospital, over the fourteen week trial.

His incompetence got to a stage that nurses had to hide patients from him because of their concerns about the quality of his work, the court heard.

Patel was from conducting surgery in the US states of New York and Oregon, previous to his emigration to Australia.
